Communications Manager: Storytelling

Job Description

The Communications Manager of Storytelling will advance UP Partnership’s profile by creating and implementing its storytelling strategy through written and visual media. This role will change narratives about racial, ethnic and geographic equity to accelerate Bexar County’s progress toward equitable results for young people. The Communications Manager of Storytelling will oversee, write, design and/or shoot compelling content for UP Partnership and its four systems-change networks and three collaboratives. This position reports to the Director of Communications with significant support provided to the organizations’ senior leadership team, including the Chief Executive Officer and Vice Presidents. Specific responsibilities include:

Storytelling Strategy and Implementation
  • Own UP Partnership’s narrative change strategy in the community through traditional and non-traditional reporting, writing/shooting and editing
  • Create and maintain relationships with cross-sector partners to develop story ideas
  • Research, pitch, enterprise, write, and capture quality content, producing creative, original and compelling stories for multiple platforms
  • Develop and cultivate a network of sources within the partnership and local, state, and national media.
  • Work alongside the social media communications manager to support social media content creation and grow social media audience
  • Support UP Partnership’s editorial calendar development
  • Drive UP Partnership’s racial and ethnic equity work through asset-based storytelling
  • Establish training procedures to educate community partners in storytelling best practices
  • Write press releases to share UP Partnership’s work within the community
Internal Communications
  • Train staff in storytelling best practices
  • Attend meetings to inform staff of organization’s strategic use of storytelling
Sustainability and Operations
  • Maintain strategic and operational coordination with Director of Communications, Communications Manager of Storytelling, and Development and Grants Managers
  • Support Development and Grant Managers with grant milestone tracking and reporting narratives
  • Support Director with communication’s budget forecasting and tracking
  • Maintain an attitude of complete ownership of team results and outcomes
  • Positively contribute to organizational culture and model UP Partnership values
  • Lead and/or support other UP Partnership initiatives and priorities as needed
Most Critical Competencies:
  • Strong writing and storytelling capabilities
  • Proficiency in technological software such as Google and Microsoft Enterprise software; Communications platforms such as Slack and Monday.com, as well as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.com
  • Knowledge of both digital and traditional media channels
  • Graphic Design
  • Familiar with Marketing/ Communication strategy and implementation
  • Demonstrates Results-Oriented Discipline
  • Strong Understanding of Systems Change Networks and Collaboratives (e.g., Excel Beyond the Bell, Diplomas, MBKSA, Our Tomorrow)
  • Asset and Deficit-Based Framing Techniques

Additional Information

The Communications Manager: Storytelling is a full-time exempt position. The anticipated start date is on or before July 1, 2022. Annual salary range is $52,000-$59,000 depending on experience.
